um yeah

weather’s nice the sun’s like already

setting

so um we just shared our posters with

each other

um do you want to like point your phone

on the screen or something

you can see it yeah

so um what made you want to make

something about biohazard stuff

um so i think i i started wanting to

do something about like the environment

and i was thinking like

it’s like the oil industry and how

awful it is and then i think it just

all linked back to like capitalism and

green

so like yeah i tied in kind of like the

cash wad with

um yeah like the environment with

biohazard

and was this something that like came to

you immediately like this is the first

thing you thought of or

you had other ideas before this that um

i think i had other ideas like i think

my first one was kind of

based on like chinese propaganda posters

and

more about like um i guess like

gender and kind of like beauty standards

but i like settled on this one partly

because it’s like

a simpler design but yeah

um yeah do you just want to like show

your poster really quickly

um we’re recording on my phone you’re so

right

so um can’t do mine

we’ll figure it out though um

yeah so my poster

has a jaguar on it and it’s crying a lot

and then all of a sudden a ton of blood

just pops out

washes over it um so yeah

my thinking was um really want to make

something with the jaguar

mainly because of the hair so did that

and then i was like what is the big

problem that jaguars face

and i was like it’s probably getting

killed by like people with guns

so uh anti-poaching right

what what inspired the hair oh

i don’t know i just just decided it i

guess and i guess uh now it’s translated

into so much my art

i guess you could say that uh my art is

very autobiographical

very personal okay yeah

for sure um

so how did you make like the text

decision i don’t remember what it said

yeah so um i was i was looking at like

some old

timey like medicine bottles and stuff

and i was like wow they have this like

really nice script you know what i’m

saying and i was just like i think that

would look

really fun with everything else and you

know

yeah yeah what about um so i saw that on

your graphic you had like it was almost

translucent and it was rotating was

there like a special reason why you

wanted to be like

this translucent pyramid or you’re just

like oh it’s cool

yeah so i originally wanted it to be

kind of like

a glass case so like kind of showcasing

the cash wad

um but then i think i was having a lot

of trouble like in blender

just figuring out how to make it

translucent and like actually look like

glass so

it just ended up that way and like i’d

like it

so oh yeah i thought your poster really

has like

a really great um like dynamic motion to

it

and the way that you paste it with like

the text flashing on and off i think

really like delivers a very clear

message about the importance of it

um rather than like something more

delayed than what i’m saying like i feel

like

for my poster it’s less of like a

a warning type of thing it’s more of

like a small subconscious thing very

casual but yours was definitely

something that i thought was very

like energetic and then yellow too just

really adds to that like it really just

popped out

sure yeah i like that like your poster

kind of makes you

think like it’s not flashy like the

blood isn’t like

splattered bright red but like yeah for

sure

i definitely like that aspect yeah how

did you like working on blender

did you think blender was like tough for

you at all or

um i think like in the beginning it was

definitely

like i didn’t know how to navigate at

all but

like i got more used to it and i’m

definitely still like

still working on it but i don’t know

i i do like working on it there’s just

like so many different

like rendering interfaces so do you see

like this

medium of i guess animation or design

as something that you will get into

so do you imagine that this type of like

graphic design

more in the sense of 3d rendering and

stuff like that do you think that’s

something that

you want to continue doing or do you

think you have more interest in

some of the other stuff that we’ve

started doing like the the animated gifs

and like

a lot of the illustrator stuff that

we’ve done um

yeah that’s a good question i think i

definitely want to explore more

like the 3d stuff um i mean like i

kind of like the art i’ve done

before college and everything it’s more

like painting and drawing and it focuses

on

kind of at least the way i learned i

focus on like

shape and like form so i definitely love

to explore that

in design and like the animation and

everything

but yeah what about you like for your

design major and everything like what

are you

thinking about um i thought blender was

super

cool i think personally i had a really

really tough time navigating it i think

there are aspects of the software that

just like

sometimes it just really works and then

sometimes it just really doesn’t

and i think that was very frustrating

for me

but um that’s not to say that i don’t

think blenders a super cool tool that we

work with

i think all these posters turned out

great i think your poster is super duper

cool

um i i mentioned before but i think it

really looks like jello

so yeah

i guess like a general question like how

did you get into design

um so i think in high school it’s really

into like

doing sewing and clothing design stuff

and then

um as i got to college i kind of got i

ended up at penn and i’m like wow this

is a

very like interesting school for the

arts and stuff like that this isn’t

really what

a lot of the focus is but i think that

after taking design 264 with avery and

just other fine arts classes

um i thought this subject matter was

super interesting

i think um you know the text and

everything we do has just been cool so

now

i’m just kind of like figuring myself

out and i’m really like

honestly interested to see the approach

that penn will take to giving a

design education and where we can go

from here

so yeah what about you why do you why

did you decide to take this particular

class

um i think first and foremost it was

like

a credit but then it also like explored

design which was an area i wasn’t that

familiar with before um

we did art and everything but i think

it’s actual like theory

and just like real design i’ve never

interacted with before so do you think

that like so

how do you compare this particular class

to your other pen

classes because i know that a lot of the

other like liberal arts and stem classes

at the college operate very differently

from the way that

studio art class like this operates um

i think it’s definitely more

collaborative um

just an exploratory just like the the

freedom that we have with each

assignment i think it’s really great

um i mean i especially think that

the fact that our class time too is so

long

really helps us like get engaged in

activities that

you know when you have a class it’s like

two and a half hours or something you

know that you really have to be like

present for those two and a half hours

whereas like

you know it’s it’s no like lie or

anything to say that like we all have

luxuries that are like an hour that

nobody pays attention to because we just

simply can’t get invested in it

yeah um

oh um so i have not taken any in-person

design classes i’ve taken like in-person

fine arts classes

which i think run a little bit

differently

just because i feel like we have a lot

more critiques in those classes

which i think is like super important

for the process as a whole i think

uh you know you’ll have a hard time

improving if you don’t uh open yourself

up to criticism and stuff like that

but um i definitely think that the way

these classes have been handled online

has been very very great especially

compared to

my other classes i feel like the

professors in these programs are trying

a whole lot harder to make this work

because they have

like they have to um you know other

professors actually know they can get

away with just like throwing power

points

on their canvas and stuff but it’s

definitely not the same here

how about um is there any art stuff

you’re working on right now that you’re

excited in your

free time um actually no like since the

semester started i haven’t

done anything like i these are like just

random projects but i do like

knitting and creating stuff okay have

you ever tried that uh embroidery

what have you ever tried embroidery or

anything oh yeah actually like during

the

um the summer like me and my friend were

actually going to start like this

mask like selling masks like

re-embroidered but they just never

played out

so you can still do it i have um over

the summer i bought an embroidery

machine

and that became like my big activity

so um honestly like

i feel kind of bad because i haven’t

used that machine and done long since

semester started kind of just been doing

stuff with this class

and screen printing a lot but yeah

oh yeah what what were your like

sprinkling projects

um my screen printing projects are kind

of just

i would say a continuation of what we do

in this class

i think a lot of times when we do stuff

in illustrator um

i’m doing it with the intent of like i

would really like to see this on some

clothes or something

so i’ll do that and then i’ll put it on

my screens and go from there

i’m usually just like stuff for myself

my personal time and um

i’m just working on getting better at it

because i think screen printing can be

like a very tough process

and it’s hard to do at home when you

don’t have all the studio space

that you know i’m used to but uh

yeah i’m just doing that and i’m having

fun with it for sure so

yeah are you you got like a

i don’t even know you got like materials

from avery right no not even from avery

avery has definitely given me some

guidance and stuff when i’ve run into

problems

but for the most part anybody can get

these materials that like blicks or

anything

uh the only expensive part is like

getting the screens which i

recommend you steal from like one of the

studios or something if you get the

chance

don’t tell anybody i said that but

but those things expensive

sucks yeah um

how about uh tell us about your outfit

my outfit um so

all right i’ll start at like the top

okay so yesterday actually went drifting

nice where’d you go second avenue second

um this jacket is actually like my mom’s

like i don’t know 20 years ago and i

just found it like three weeks ago

so um and then this blazer i also

noticed thank you um

yeah i don’t know i just like it was

like i was about to leave and i saw it

on the rack i was like

i have to get it um yeah and then

jeans yeah

what about you um i got a jacket with a

lot of paint on it

from my friend and then i’m wearing a

sweater

guide to thrift and pants that i painted

on

pretty tight um giving me warm this

water great weather honestly i think

this is like

perfect i love like the breeze but then

like

i don’t know i i went to like i went to

sarah green

um i’ve i’ve lived in philly my entire

life i’ve never been there

really it’s so pretty but

um yeah i’ve only like i’ve walked there

and then back to the campus i don’t know

too much but do you think you’ll live

here second semester

um yeah so as of now i have

a dorm on campus so if that holds really

um hill hill okay i lived in hill my

freshman year

super fun oh really how was like

i don’t know how was it i mean this

social scene is really great i think um

just the way it’s like your rooms are

super small so you’re kind of forced to

be outside of it

and super nice having a dining hall in

your living space so uh

overall no complaints yeah i feel

spoiled now that like living in my

apartment and having like space to

myself

it’s like very different i definitely

miss having dining halls though like

having to cook for myself every single

meal is really tough

and it makes me so broke so yeah

word any final thoughts

i guess not really i think

actually i think another like question

we were supposed to discuss i guess was

like um

um like

art or like writing like conversation as

art so like i don’t know

like you’ve had critiques in your like

art seminars or studios but like what do

you think of that and that role in your

work

um so yeah i think dialogue is super

important for

art at all and i think um you know

as noticed myself and many other artists

kind of hold themselves to particular

standards

or how they perceive their art should be

and i think just having a second opinion

or

just discussing something that doesn’t

necessarily have to be a critique

can be super helpful for your art just

like i’ve definitely had conversations

with my friends where they’ve been like

oh like you should really think about

this when you’re doing that and i’ll be

like oh okay a word

and it’ll greatly influence everything

else i do um or it’ll just be like small

things that you forget and you know i

think it’s great like even having this

conversation now

makes me rethink some of my own art and

my poster a little bit

um especially like sharing work too i

think is great just being inspired by

other people’s stuff

i think in this class i’ve definitely

seen some really amazing stuff

that has like helped motivate me to do

other stuff

um shout out claudio you drew an

elephant once that really resonated with

me

the people in our classrooms i think

they’re great

some people in our class are amazing at

drawing and i think it’s super

cool and i think it’s great that like

there’s such a distinct

number of styles in our class like

um i think it might be like constance or

something like does a lot of drawing and

stuff like she has those handmade

animations

and then um you know whereas other

people

like i think bish has done a lot of

stuff that’s just more like flat design

and fly graphics and stuff and i just

i think it’s very interesting seeing

other people’s stuff

so yeah what do you think about

our dialogue and stuff do you think that

this is the type of thing that is

helpful to your art or yeah i

for sure i think critique is definitely

the biggest way that i’ve like grown as

an artist i think

um even in high school like i had a tiny

class of like five people from my art

class and

like we really grew close and like

understood each other in each other’s

work really well so like the critique

was maybe like the best thing that i’ve

gotten out of the class and so i think

yeah just like going forward um dialogue

is like super important for me for like

my art

i think dialogue in general just helps

us grow yeah

bored

cool
